Video Clip from the Lesson

Description

This lesson provides a broad overview of the oil and gas midstream industry.  It starts with nomenclature and vocabulary to help the students better understand and communicate with industry veterans.  It then reviews the prevalent theory of how oil and gas was formed to provide background for factors affecting operations.  Finally, it covers the various subsectors or midstream, transportation, gas processing and treating, storage, and terminalling in non-technical language.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss why different hydrocarbon molecules behave differently.

  • List three different types of wells.

  • Explain the three things which determine what comes out of a well.

  • List the three different functions of pipelines and the role of each.

  • Describe the midstream value chain.

  • List the three different materials moved by oil and gas pipelines.

  • Explain what properties allow the separation of natural gas liquids from each other.

  • Describe the transportation function and list its subsectors.

  • Describe natural gas processing and treating or midstream.

  • Describe the storage and terminalling subsector of midstream.
